Fire alarm system and preventive measures
We take fire safety very seriously and are obligated to conduct annual checks of your alarm. You will receive a notification from the fire safety manager when the inspection is scheduled.
Read on for tips and advice on how to avoid triggering the alarm in your home or in a shared kitchen.
- Many live in small homes In the smallest homes. The distance from the kitchen to the smoke detector may be shorter, so you must be extra careful to ensure adequate ventilation in your home when cooking in the kitchen. All our smoke detectors are set to the correct requirements and are connected to automatic notification systems.
- Don't leave until the food is ready! And never leave items on top of stove
- When you start cooking, you are responsible for monitoring it until the food is ready and the stove is turned off. All our homes have stove guards. Read more about stove guards at the very bottom. If you forget the food and high heat and smoke form, the fire alarm will be triggered.
- Ensure good ventilation and use the kitchen fan. Always use the kitchen fan when cooking and, if necessary, open a window if the kitchen fan does not remove all the steam/smoke from cooking. When using electrical appliances such as waffle irons, toasters, and rice cookers, place them under or near the kitchen fan. If you find that the kitchen fan does not have adequate ventilation, you must report this to the caretaker for inspection and improvement.
- Cleaning is important! Make sure the oven and stove tops are clean of food residues and spills as they can become flammable and contribute to rapid smoke development. Therefore, wipe off the stove tops and oven after cooking before it has a chance to settle.
- The smoke detector must never be touched or removed! If your smoke detector goes off, do not attempt to disconnect it under any circumstances. If the smoke detector is dismantled or attempted to be removed, the fire supervisor will receive a notification of a fault in the system and specifically which smoke detector it concerns, and Securitas or the fire manager will respond to your home. This is considered a breach of contract and will result in a written warning and a fee for the response.
- Covering the smoke detector can be life-threatening. Tempted to cover the smoke detector with a sock or plastic bag? It must not happen under any circumstances. If you cover the smoke detector, it will cause a fault that will prevent the system from working if a fire were to occur, putting yourself and other residents in danger. Covering the smoke detector is considered a serious breach of contract and will result in a written warning and a fee.
Are you experiencing frequent alarms when cooking? Submit a request to the caretaker for inspection of the kitchen fan and further consultation.
